I had the privilege of interviewing Lynette Eason, on our radio show “Kingdom Highlights”, for her new book, “Too Close To Home” Book One in her Women Of Justice series published by Revell.  People look at me funny when I tell them that I am a sucker for a good romance but that is part of my makeup and that is that.  However, give me a romance where cars get blown up, there are sniper attacks and there is a sociopath on the loose and I am a very happy person.  It has a lot to do with testosterone I suppose.

Connor Wolfe is the agent in charge of an investigation into the kidnappings of several teenagers; a few of which have been discovered murdered with no clues to how or why.  Samantha Cash is brought in to the case because of the need to investigate a link to a possible on-line predator.  Connor is a widower with a teenage daughter who maybe dealing with the very on-line predator her dad is seeking.  Samantha has a sister that is dealing with the results of a major trauma.  Together these two bring all this baggage into the case and begin to build a romance on top of trying to catch a kidnapper/killer.

“Too Close To Home” is a thriller, no doubt about it.  Both Connor and Samantha are in deadly danger from page one.  What sets this book apart from others in this genre is that the hero is in need of salvation.  Normally the hero & heroine bring some other character to salvation but here the need is on Connor.  There are so many wonderful themes in this book.  The characters are so real and you root for them to complete their mission and you root for their romance to blossom.  Ms. Eason knows how to tell a story that keeps you flipping the pages and guessing as to who the bad guys really are.  This is an exciting read and I recommend it highly (as long as you are like me and like exploding cars, sniper attacks and a sociopath mixed in with your romance).   I am looking forward the the next book in the series.

Deeanne Gist in her new book, “Beguiled”,  published by Bethany House  answers the question what happens when a romance writer teams up with a suspense writer and creates a mix of the two?  The answer a very well written suspenseful romance.

Rylee Monroe is a dogwalker in Charleston’s wealthiest neighborhood.  Now a thief is terrorizing the area and worse the police seem to think it has something to do with Rylee.  The thief seems to be targeting the homes of the families she walks the dogs for.  Reporter Logan woods is following the break-ins with the hope of publishing his coverage as a true-crime book.  The more he digs, the more he realizes that Rylee seems to be at the center of everything.  As danger draws nearer, Logan must choose:  chase the girl, the story or plunge into the shadows after the villain who threatens everything.

Deeanne Gist is famous for her spirited romances set in historical times.  In this book Ms. Gist teams up with her former critique book partner J. Mark Bertrand and they combine their unique skills to bring a fresh, exciting suspense filled romance to the table.  This is a good read, will keep you guessing all the way until the end and the suspense will keep you flipping pages.  Maybe these two will team up again in the future but in the meantime we will keep ourselves occupied with their individual offerings.

Book Review: The Silent Governess by Julie Klassen

Julie Klassen in her new book, “The Silent Governess”,  published by Bethany House takes us to 19th century England and gives us a compelling story with a gothic feel to it.

As the story begins,  Olivia Keene flees her home because she believes herself guilty of a crime.  She eventually stumbles upon a grand estate where an elaborate celebration is in progress. But all is not as joyous as it seems…. Lord Bradley has just learned a terrible secret, which, if exposed, will change his life forever. When he glimpses a figure on the grounds, he fears a spy or thief has overheard his devastating news. He is stunned to discover the intruder is a scrap of a woman with her throat badly injured. Fearing she will spread his secret, he gives the girl a post and confines her to his estate. As Olivia and Lord Bradley’s secrets catch up with them, will their hidden pasts ruin their hope of finding love?

This is a book of secrets and how keeping dark secrets can hinder and destroy one’s life and happiness.  This is also a tale of 19th century England and all of its social standings and attaining and preserving one’s place in society.  Ms. Klassen does a wonderful job of transporting back to that time with her vivid descriptions of clothing, language and wonderful characters.  This is a fine read and a wonderful romance.
