In ancient Rome, the 14th of February was a pagan holiday in honor of Juno, the Goddess of women and marriage and the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses.
Later, however, it became a Christian holiday named after a Christian priest. Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. While in prison Valentine continued to minister. He witnessed to the guards. One of the guards was a good man who had adopted a blind girl. He asked Valentine if his God could help his daughter. Valentine prayed and the girl was given her sight. The guard and his whole family, 46 people, believed in Jesus and were baptized. Because these people had come to know Jesus, Valentine praised God right there in his prison cell. When the emperor heard about this, he was furious that Valentine was still making converts even in prison, so he had Valentine clubbed and beheaded. Just before his execution, he asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her “From Your Valentine,” a phrase that lived ever after.
Child of God – Jesus repeated His command, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” ” (John 13:34-35 NIV). Loving someone is more than just giving
them a card or saying you love them, real love is shown in actions, real love can be felt. Husbands must love their wives to the point of death, parents must love their children to bring them back home if they stray and we must love the world to bring the message of Jesus to the lost and
dying to save them from an eternity in hell separated from the love of God!
Lord, help me to have the kind of love that you have. You said that there is no greater love than this, that we would give our lives for our friends. I want to have that kind of unconditional love. Give me your grace and power to be able to do so. Knowing that giving away my life not only means to die for somebody but to die to myself day by day out of love for others. Thank you for your grace and thank you for your example. Amen.
If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
