“Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”(Matthew 26:27-28 NIV),
“Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it. “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.”(Mark 14:23-24 NIV),
“In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”(Luke 22:20 NIV)
Paul tells us, “In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:25 NIV).
A covenant is a mutual agreement of two or more persons or parties. God made His first covenant with Noah, “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth” (Genesis 9:13 NIV). God made His next covenant with Abraham, “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you” (Genesis 17:7 NIV). And just as God did with Noah He established a sign of the covenant only this time the sign was in blood, “This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised” (Genesis 17:10 NIV), “Whether born in your
household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant” (Genesis 17:13 NIV). When a male is circumcised blood is shed and they entered into agreement with the covenant of God that He was their God and they were His people. From the time of Moses the Jewish people has the Ark of the Covenant which had the Mercy Seat where God met with man and the blood was sprinkled. The sign of the covenant was always blood. “Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, which had the
golden altar of incense and the gold-covered Ark of the Covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant” (Hebrews 9:3-4 NIV), “But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never
without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance” (Hebrews 9:7 NIV).
Jesus took the cup and said that this was a new covenant, no longer was our blood to be shed as a sign of God’s covenant, now Jesus was shedding His blood in our place. Jesus came as our High Priest and shed His blood once and for all people, “He did not enter by means of the blood of
goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:12 NIV). The blood of Jesus cleanses us from our Sin and has the power to continually cleanse us and to sanctify us so that we no longer sin, “But
now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself” (Hebrews 9:26 NIV).
Child of God – God made an everlasting covenant with man saying that He would be our God and we would be His people and the sign of it was in shed blood. Jesus came and offered His blood in our place doing away with animal sacrifice. Now we are made clean by the washing of the
blood of Jesus and we are sanctified unto the Father so that we may come before Him as our Father. “The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will
write them on their minds.” Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more” (Hebrews 10:15-17 NIV)
Our prayer:
Lord, thank you for the blood of the New Covenant that you shed for me. I know that the meaning of the power of your blood is much deeper than what I can comprehend. But the thing that moves me the most is that through it all my sins and the sins of mankind have been forgiven. Thank
you that I can call myself yours and I can call you my God because of the blood. Please help me to learn more about the implications of your covenant in the blood upon my life and give me revelation of it as well.
Amen.
