Gilbert Morris in his new book, “
The River Rose” Book Two in The Water Wheel series published by B&H Publishing Group takes us into the lives of Jeanne Bettencourt and Clint Hardin.
From the back cover: “I Know you don’t like men very much, mama.” She didn’t actively dislike all men, of course. But she didn’t trust them.
Life hasn’t been easy for Jeanne Bettencourt, a young widow struggling to provide for her six-year-old daughter. But hope arrives in the form of the Helena Rose, a steamboat she unexpectedly inherits from a distant, departed relative. Jeanne’s father had captained a similar vessel and taught her how to pilot a steamer; this could be her ticket to a renewed livelihood, one of comfort and security, for her and for her daughter.
Unfortunately, there is another heir to the Helena Rose – a tough man named Clint Hardin. Jeanne, a Christian woman, feels that she can’t possible “live” with a man on the boat. But both are desperate for work, so they agree to an uneasy compromise to keep their relationship on a strict business basis.
As they begin their successful partnership on the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers, the slowly softening Clint becomes attracted to Jeanne – who is now being courted by a wealthy plantation owner. With her family and future at stake, the desires of Jeanne’s heart are becoming duly complex. Only faith can steer her through what happens next.
On my to do list is to take a steamboat cruise on the Mississippi. The pacing is slow, there is the sound of the paddlewheel and there is the feeling of romance as you cruise by the cities and states of the South on the Big Muddy. Until that time I’ll have to settle for reading about it and Gilbert Morris has done it again this time putting us on a steamboat on both the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers. What more can we ask for? “The River Rose” gives us much, much more. It is a book of romance as Jeanne meets Clint and they fall in love. It is an adventure novel as the duo try to make the steamboat work to make a living and a future for themselves. Gilbert Morris is an expert at bringing historical events to life while weaving in the fictional aspects of the story in a seamless flowing pattern. He makes you care for all the people involved and takes you along for the journey. This is also just plain fun and exciting as well.
If, like me, you have read everything ever written by Gilbert Morris then you are going to love this book. If this is your first reading of anything by Gilbert Morris you are going to love this book. “The River Rose” is a very fulfilling read and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Book Review: “Welcome Back to Pie Town” by Lynne Hinton

Lynne Hinton in her new book, “
Welcome Back to Pie Town” Book Two in the Pie Town series published by HarperCollins Publishers returns us to the life of Pie Town, New Mexico.
From the back cover: Life in Pie Town should be sweet. There are pies in the diner again, the church has been rebuilt, and single mother Trina Lockhart has found a home for herself and her baby daughter. Trina has even found love with Raymond Twinhorse, who has returned from Afghanistan after being injured and is trying to form a real family with her.
However, Pie Town now feels like a totally different place to Raymond. Perhaps it’s he who has changed, due to the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. But when an accident befalls Trina and Raymond is implicated in a crime, it will take the entire community of Pie Town to clear his name, find him help, and welcome him back into the fold.
PTSD or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder affects a lot of our brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. I know a veteran who, when he hears a loud noise, instantly ducks and reaches for his weapon, which, of course, he no longer carries. It seems if someone loses a limb then we are very understanding but if someone suffers emotional trauma then we don’t seem to be so quick to understand. Suppose a person is hit in the ankle severely and suffers what is known as a bone bruise? The skin bruise will heal in over a week but the bone bruise takes months to heal. The problem is no one can see it and, as the skin bruise is healed, we don’t understand the pain from the bone bruise. The same is true for PTSD, it is emotional, internal, trauma that cannot be medicated away. What the person needs is understanding and lots and lots of love. Lynne Hinton has done a tremendous job of showing the results of PTSD and the healing that comes when all of Pie Town comes to the rescue. This is a great story as, not only is it exciting, but it shows both sides of the response to a person who suffers from PTSD. I think this is a worthy addition to Pie Town and should be read by everyone.

Book Review: “Legacy Road” by Graham Garrison

Graham Garrison in his new book, “
Legacy Road” Book Two in the Wes Watkins series published by Kregel Publications returns us into the life of Wes Watkins.
From the back cover: The legacy continues…
The letters had almost been forgotten. Wes Watkins had filed them away, ignored and unread. But as he reflects on the legacy of hometown hero, Michael Gavin, those letters—the words of his estranged father—resurface. Wes wonders if it’s time to follow Michael’s example and mend his relationships, starting with his dad.
But were the letters better left hidden? When a family secret is revealed, W?es fights his feelings of anger, betrayal and mistrust towards his parents…and even his girlfriend, Emmy. With his relationships crumbling around him, Wes can only turn to God to ask for strength. Can Wes forgive? Or must he just move on?
Set against the haunting backdrop of Civil War battlefields, “Legacy Road” is a grace-full exploration of the ups and downs of human relationships, of family ties lost and found, and of the age-old question: how do you forgive others–and release yourself–from a past that threatens to destroy you?
The Dictionary defines legacy as, “something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past”. Most times, due to our mistakes, we pass the wrong things down to our children and then they have to deal with our issues. That is the case presented in “Legacy Road”. Wes Watkins has to deal with issues from a drunken dad who is in jail and secrets that his mother didn’t tell him about. Confronting the past is always painful but if we can make it through the pain and offer forgiveness then we can heal from our emotional wounds and grow and move on. “Legacy Road” is about facing the issues in our life from our relationships with family. Mr. Garrison offers us a story where the pain is overwhelming for Wes Watkins but God is there and is Wes can turn to God and receive forgiveness from Him then he, in turn, will be able to forgive others. I liked this book and am going to go read the first book from Mr. Garrison, “Hero’s Tribute”.
