In December 2008 “Leverage” made its television premiere on cable channel TNT.  The show runs on the premise that a group of five individuals who are high grade thieves in their own fields can work those skills together to bring down bad guys and bring justice to those that have been hurt by the bad guys.

Timothy Hutton is Nathan Ford, the head of the team and the only “good” guy.  He is an ex-insurance investigator who learned all the tricks of a con and, therefore, knows how to run one.  He is helped by Gina Bellman who plays Sophie whose character is the Grifter.  She is the front person who spins the con.  Then there is Aldis Hodge who plays Hardison the Hacker.  He can break into anything including an airline’s electronic system from 3,000 miles away.  There is Christian Kane, the soft spoken Eliot, who is the Hitter.  When there is a need for physicality Eliot is the person the team relies on.  He is also very good at cooking and disguises.  Finally there is Beth Riesgraf as Parker who is the Thief.  While all of them are thieves she is incredible and has the ability to rappel down skyscrapers.

“Leverage” is like a 21st Century Mission:  Impossible the 1960′s show that also ran incredible cons using high class spies to save countries.  Like them this five person team also uses the con to take down the bad guys and provide justice to the individuals that have been previously wronged and hurt.

CBS DVD (distributed by Paramount) has released Season 1 and Season 2 of Leverage”  on DVD so, if you are like I was and missed the first season on TV then you can quickly catch up while staying current with Season Three which is currently airing.  This is a wonderful series!  This show is clever, smartly written, well acted and great fun to watch.

TV Review: The Mentalist Created by Bruno Heller

On September 23, 2008 The Mentalist made his television premiere on CBS.  Simon Baker plays Patrick Jane, an ex con artist who conned individuals into believing he was a psychic medium.  His career came to an end when he ridiculed a serial killer named Red John on national TV and was made to pay for it when that killer murdered his wife and daughter.  Patrick Jane now works full time as a consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) helping them to solve some really difficult cases.

As portrayed by Simon Baker, Patrick Jane is extremely intelligent, believes that he is always correct and that he is smarter than anyone else in the room.  He is extremely observant and uses his old skills to “read” the potential suspects in his cases.  Due to his skills he is able to help the CBI close their cases and have great success.  He is working with Teresa Lisbon who is the head of the team, Kimball Cho, Wayne Rigsby, and Grace Van Pelt who round out the staff of investigators.

Patrick Jane is like a 21st Century Sherlock Holmes who uses his observations skills to know where a suspect has been, if they are lying or not and their guilt or innocence.  He is a complex character who is great fun to watch and while he may seem to be a loner he needs his team mates to keep him grounded.

CBS DVD (distributed by Paramount) has released Season 1 of The Mentalist on DVD so, if you are like I was and missed the first season on TV then you can quickly catch up while staying current with Season Two which is currently airing.  This is a wonderful series!  This show is clever, smartly written, well acted and great fun to watch.

TV Review: Barnaby Jones–A Quinn Martin Production

April 7, 2010 at 12:39 pm | Posted in Television | Leave a comment

On January 28, 1973 the private investigator, Barnaby Jones made his television premiere on CBS.  The networks order series in either full season or half season increments.  Back then a full season was 26 episodes which makes a half season 13 episodes.  If a show didn’t make it from it premiere in September then a new show premiered mid-season or in January when the shows came back from the holiday break.  Barnaby Jones was a mid-season replacement in 1973 which is why the first season only runs for 13 episodes.

Buddy Epsen, who was 65 at the time, portrays Barnaby Jones, the elderly Private Investigator who comes out of his retirement to investigate the murder of his son in the first episode:  “Requiem for a Son”.  Lee Meriwether plays Betty Jones, Barnaby’s daughter-in-Law who, once she gets over her grief as a widow, becomes Office Manager for Barnaby Jones Investigations.

CBS DVD (distributed by Paramount) has released Season 1 of Barnaby Jones on DVD and I got a chance to view all 13 episodes.  I did not watch the series when it aired in 1973 through 1980 and I deprived myself of a treat.  This is a wonderful series!  Barnaby Jones is played like an elderly Colombo as the murderer in this series is identified at the beginning of the show and it is up to Barnaby Jones to figure out all the details and nab him or her.

Barnaby Jones didn’t need the CSI department as he did all of his own forensic work in a lab adjoining his office.  This show was clever, smartly written, well acted and was great fun to watch.  I am eagerly looking forward to the release of the remaining seasons of Barnaby Jones.
