“Now the sojourn of the children of Israel who lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years–on that very same day–it came to pass that all the armies of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt” (Exodus 12:40-41 NKJV).

Beginning today it is 28 days until Christmas and we here at Word of Encouragement would like to spend this time together reviewing the prophecies and scriptures concerning the birthday of our King and seeing  how they might apply to us today and seeing what encouragement we can receive from them.

430 years passed since Joseph took his father, Jacob, and all his brethren into Egypt. 430 years since the children of Israel were free men. A new Pharaoh had turned the family of Joseph into slaves of the Egyptians because they were afraid of them. These Egyptians made the burdens of the Israelites terrible and afflicted them greatly for they believed that the Israelites had no help. Then one day Moses stood before Pharaoh and told him God said let my people go! And God afflicted them greatly and Pharaoh let them go! In one night God turned His people from poor slaves to rich and free. In one night God turned His people from being children of Israel to being children of God.

At the end of the book of Malachi, the prophet prophesied about the coming of John the Baptist and Jesus, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD” (Malachi 4:5 NKJV). The prophet Malachi preached from 440BC to 430BC. From 430BC to the announcements of Gabriel to Zacharias and Mary there was silence. 430 years where the Israelites became subject to Roman rule and paid tribute to Caesar and prayed for deliverance.

Then one day Gabriel came to Zacharias the priest and told him that he was to have a son whom they should call John and he would be the herald of the Messiah.  Six months later Gabriel spoke to Mary and told her she was to have a son whom they should call Jesus, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31-33 NKJV).

Then came the day of deliverance, “So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:6-7 NKJV). 430 years since the promise was given to the night when the promise was fulfilled.

Child of God – Paul tells us, “Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect” (Galatians 3:16-17 NKJV). Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, a type of the world and was supposed to lead
them into The Promised Land. Jesus came to take us out of this world and our sins and lead us into His kingdom with Him. It’s a promise!  And Jesus keeps His promises.

Our prayer:
Lord, thank you that we can trust in all the promises that you give us because you always keep your word. We see all the promises in your Word fulfilled through the centuries and we are still waiting for those to come. Lord I know that the same way, you are going to fulfill all the things that you have spoken over me, so I am waiting…! Amen

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you

Book Review: Ransomed Dreams By Sally John

Sally John in her new book, “Ransomed Dreams” Book One in the Side Roads series published by Tyndale brings us to the world of politics and the people who live in that world.

Sheridan Montgomery is the wife of  Eliot Montgomery, U.S. Ambassador to Caracas, Venezuela.  An assassination attempt leaves Eliot crippled and Sheridan traumatized.  The two abandon everything and escape to Topalaa small out-of-touch city in Mexico; no phone service, no paved roads, no Internet.  Sheridan feels her life and marriage are over and she is only going through the motions as a companion/nursemaid to her husband who is in chronic pain and cannot bear to be touched.

Luke Traynor  shows up with a message from her sister that their dying father would like to see her.  Now she has to travel to Chicago and deal with seeing her estranged father, her domineering sister, her emotions for Luke and all sorts of information about her family that are just coming to light.

The dictionary defines ransom as “a consideration paid or demanded for the release of someone or something from captivity”.  Sheridan Montgomery has dreams that are taken in captivity and it takes God’s grace, forgiveness and love to ransom those dreams back.   Ms. John weaves a captivating story with wonderful characters that breathe.  I was glad to spend the time with these characters and look forward to more from Ms. John in this exciting series.

Melody Carlson in her new book, “Christmas At Harrington’s” published by Revell gives us a story that will really get us into the Christmas spirit.

Lena Markham has made a lot of mistakes in her life and the big one was trusting someone who she thought loved her and who got her sent to prison for things he did.  Now, seven years later, she is free to start her life over and she leaves it to the prison official as to where.  So with a bus ticket, $65, second hand clothes and a job waiting for her she boards a bus for New Haven, MN.

Man has plans and God has plans and His plans overwrite our plans so when Lena does not get the promised job God steps in.  Seems Lena has been nice to others that she meets, that is her nature, and she has a red coat so she is offered the position of Ms. Santa

At 167 pages “Christmas At Harrington’s” is a novella that has warmth and charm to it.  It is a story about Christmas but it is a story about people, who we are and how we relate to others.  And this is a story about second chances.  God is a God of restoration and redemption and Ms. Carlson shows us how hard God works for us as He changes Lena;s life.  Yes, it is time for Christmas and there is no better way to begin than with this wonderful story.  It is even a book that can be given as a gift to everyone just to remind them who we are and how God moves in our lives.  We all need a reminder at times and this is a nice way to do it.
