William E. Jefferson in his new book, “the point book coverThe Point” The Redemption of Oban Ironbout published by Port Estillyen Productions brings us into the lives of Hollie and Goodwin Macbreeze.

From the Back Cover:  SEARCHING for peace and inspiration, Hollie and Goodwin Macbreeze travel to the Isle of Estillyen—a distant harbor known for bringing ancient words of worth to the present. Their lives become unexpectedly and inseparably intertwined with the reclusive Oban Ironbout—and a mystery from the past that will transform them all. It is a tale of pain…and redemption.

First off there really is an Estillyen that you have to take a ferry to visit and there really are monks there.  “The Point” is a story about pain and how, if it is not resolved, will make us reclusive and bitter and try to keep the world away.  “The Point” is a story about love and how it can break down the walls that we use to protect us from that pain and can heal us.  I think Mr. Jefferson has done a good job in his handling of the subject.  It is an allegory and, sometimes, I have problems with allegories and I think this was one of them.  Other than that the story is well done.

Sherry Kyle in her new book, “The Heart Stone book coverThe Heart Stone” published by Abingdon Press takes us into the lives of Jessica MacAllister and Evelyn Sweeney.

From the back cover:  Two women.  Two journeys.  A season that may change their lives forever.

When the alcoholic father of Jessica MacAllister’ s son reappears in their lives, Jessica and her son go to her Uncle George for advice and refuge.

Following a year of grief, Evelyn Sweeney is finally ready to move on. Pondering her new path in life, her mind drifts to her first love, George MacAllister.

When the lives of these two women cross, they discover that one heart-shaped ring binds their stories together. But will the results be a rekindled faith and new hope?  Or will it lead them both back into the darkness they’ve fought for so long?

Jessica wants to escape from the father of her son and decides to take her son down to Santa Cruz for the week.  Evelyn is a year into being a widow after forty years or marriage and in her sixties when she decides to look up her old flame from forty years before.  Nick is a firefighter who longs for his own family.  The lives of all these characters dovetail around George MacAllister.  Ms. Kyle does a wonderful job of getting all these characters lives to unfold as each is told separately until they all meet.  “The Heart Stone” is a wonderful, charming romance.  The themes of letting go of past hurts, questioning whether you can be forgiven and trusting again is explored with a deft hand by Ms. Kyle.  Ms. Kyle does an outstanding job of bringing her characters to life and you really want their romance to succeed.  I am already looking forward to more from this talented author.

Book Review: “Path of Freedom” by Jennifer Hudson Taylor

Jennifer Hudson Taylor in her new book, “Path of Freedom book coverPath of Freedom” Book Three in the Quilts of Love series published by Abingdon Press takes us into the lives of Flora Saferight and Bruce Millikan.

From the back cover:  How much would you risk to save another’s life?

When Quakers Flora Saferight and Bruce Millikan embark on the Underground Railroad, they agree to put their differences aside to save the lives of a pregnant slave couple. With only a quilt from Flora’s mother as a secret guide, the foursome follows the stitches into unknown treachery.

As they embark on their perilous journey, they hope and pray that their path is one of promise where love sustains them, courage builds faith, and forgiveness leads to freedom.

I would think that the most dangerous trip was along the Underground Railway.  If you were caught the slaves were sent back to wherever they had escaped from for punishment and whoever else was there could be killed for helping in the escape.  Yet, Flora and Bruce are willing to chance it for a couple that they don’t really know.  “Path of Freedom” is a nice romance also filled with action and suspense.   Jennifer Hudson Taylor has filled this story with many themes, one being the bullying and what it produces in the person being bullied.  I enjoyed this aspect of the book so much as this is not a theme that is popular.  Want a fun read that will not only entertain you but make you think as well?  Well then I recommend “Path of Freedom”.
