“When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.” (2 Timothy 1:5 NKJV)

For the benefit of our international readers today we celebrate Grandparents Day in the United States. Grandparents Day is a time for families to gather and share stories, traditions and memories among the generations.

God has given us a precious gift in our families and especially precious is our Grandparents. If nothing else they can remember a time of
history that just doesn’t exist anymore. Grandparents are the only persons that can tell you the stories about your parents from a first hand experience that your parents will never tell you about. While parents have to be the disciplinarians in the family, Grandparents can grant much more liberality. While parents will scold for the extra cookie, Grandparents will allow it. Grandparents also seem to have much more time to do all the things children need to do; go for long walks, have stories read to them, be doted upon, talked to and listened to.

These last two are the ones that Paul is referring to in his second letter to Timothy. Lois, Timothy’s Grandmother, had faith in God that she passed along to her daughter, Eunice or Timothy’s mother. Now the faith of Lois is present in Timothy. Why, because his mother passed it to him alone? Mostly, but Timothy had to have received some of his grandmother’s faith directly from her. By spending time with Timothy and telling him about God’s answers to her prayers, His healing of her infirmities and His presence in her times of loneliness, she was able to pass along a valuable gift that helped her grandson immeasurably.

Paul told Timothy, “But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God” (1 Timothy 5:4 NKJV). God has given each of us a role to play in the rearing of our family.  Grandparents have a special gift that they can pass on to the second generation and by so doing please God.

Child of God – do you still have your Grandparents? If so honor them, they are a gift from God for you to hear first hand about a time before you existed. If they know God then you are exceptionally blessed, if not then share with them about the Lord. Learn from your Grandparents, they have wisdom that only comes from life that they can impart to you if you let them.

Our prayer:
Lord, help me to value my grandparents and love and honor them as much as I can before they depart. Help me to be a blessing for them and be kind to them even in spite of anything that they might have done wrong in the past. And if I don’t have a grandparent help me to find a surrogate grandparent.

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you.
