“Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” “There is one in Endor,” they said”. (1 Samuel 28:7)

In Deuteronomy 18:10-12 God commands His people, “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.
Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.”

First there was Moses who led the people of God.  When He died Joshua led the people as they took possession of The Promised Land.  When he died there was the period of the Judges, men and women whom The Lord would raise up to deliver His people from the trouble they had gotten themselves into.  And the last of these Judges was named Samuel.  It is he who ushered in the transition from the time of the Judges to the time of the Kings.  1 Samuel 28:3 tells us, “Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had lamented for him and buried him in Ramah, in his own city. ”  With  Samuel’s death Saul, the first king of Israel, was on his own. For a while Saul was doing well, he obeyed the law of God and “expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land” (1 Samuel 28:3). Then trouble came; the Philistine army came up against him, David, the future king of Israel, who had defeated Goliath, is now the bodyguard of the king of the Philistines and “When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart” (1 Samuel 28:5).

Saul had always had Samuel to lean on in time of trouble and now Saul is in trouble without Samuel to turn to and God does not respond to him.  So Saul gets, what seems to him, a brilliant idea. He will go to a medium, which he himself had expelled from the land, and have this medium bring forth Samuel so that Saul can talk with him regarding this Philistine army problem. The problem is that what he wants to do is detestable to the Lord and he himself drove out these practitioners from Israel.  How does one reconcile this problem? Simple, “Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman (1 Samuel 28:8). This woman does call up a spirit that everyone says is Samuel but probably isn’t. Saul and this spirit discuss what will happen in the battle and Saul is told that he and his sons will die the next day and Israel will be defeated. And the next day everything happens exactly as the spirit said.

When God gives a command He expects that everyone obey what He commanded including kings and others in authority and Saul was obedient. He did expel all the mediums from Israel. How often should we obey God?  Should not the answer be all the time? Then Saul should never have even thought about consulting a medium and he knew it. He changed from the clothes of a king to disguise himself and visited her at night. As if his efforts would hide him from the eyes of God! The bible does state clearly that the woman sees a spirit but Saul is the one who determines that it is Samuel and the woman agrees. This spirit never claims to be Samuel just behaves as if it is Samuel and tells Saul things he believes. What do you think would have been the answer if Saul had spent his time in prayer before The Lord rather than wasting it traveling to Endor and consulting with this woman?

Child of God – How often do we call the number on our TV screen to speak with a psychic? How often do we read the horoscopes in the paper or on Internet sites just to see what they have to say? We say that we do not believe what we are reading and this is just harmless amusement. Can’t we find a better source of amusement? God finds our actions detestable every time we pick up a phone or read what the planets have to say or what someone is predicting for the New Year. At this time of Halloween we even dress our innocent children up as witches or ourselves even and we take pleasure in doing so. God is not pleased. We sin against Him every time we do what we do. We need to repent, ask forgiveness, turn from our evil actions and seek Him as to what our future is. After all He has plans for us, plans for good and not for evil to bring us to a desired end. He is a light unto our path and a lamp unto our feet. He will lead us and guide us in all truth. God is for us not against us. God loves us and will forgive us if we will just confess our sins before Him.

Our prayer:
Lord, forgive me for all the times I have looked for my responses in the wrong places and have forgotten you instead of going only to you in the first place. Help me to see the error when it comes disguised to me and I’m tempted to do the wrong thing only because everybody else does it as a normal practice. Thank you Lord for giving me the guidance that I need when I seek you for it. Lord open the eyes of the rest of your children to see the truth and not follow error anymore. In Jesus name. Amen.

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you.
