Sarah Loudin Thomas in her new book, “Miracle in a Dry Season book coverMiracle in a Dry Season” published by Bethany House  brings us into the life of Perla Long.

From the back cover:  In a Drought, It’s the Darkest Cloud
That Brings Hope

It’s 1954 and Perla Long’s arrival in the sleepy town of Wise, West Virginia, was supposed to go unnoticed. She just wants a quiet, safe place for her and her daughter, Sadie, where the mistakes of her past can stay hidden. But then drought comes to Wise, and Perla is pulled into the turmoil of a town desperately in need of a miracle.

Casewell Phillips has resigned himself to life as a bachelor . . . until he meets Perla. She’s everything he’s sought in a woman, but he can’t get past the sense that she’s hiding something. As the drought worsens, Perla’s unique gift divides the town in two, bringing both gratitude and condemnation, and placing the pair in the middle of a storm of anger and forgiveness, fear and faith.

In 1954 things were a little different from they are now. For one morals were treated with high regard and having a child out of marriage was not only bad it branded you as a loose woman. Perla has come to Wise to get past that depiction of her but some of the townspeople jump all over it. Casewell is one of the exceptions. He not only falls in love with her immediately he also falls in love with Sadie. And therein lies the story. It is all about healing, getting past your mistakes and not only moving on with your life but finding the future that God has prepared for you. Ms. Loudin Thomas has done an outstanding job of bringing all of these elements together and make them work. And did I mention it is also a romance? I liked the characters and I liked the book, what more can you ask?
