“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.” (Luke 1:31 NKJV)

We are counting the days until Christmas and we here at Word of Encouragement would like to spend this time together reviewing the prophecies and scriptures concerning the birthday of our King and seeing how they might apply to us today and seeing what encouragement we can receive from them.

An angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20-21 NKJV).  All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23 NKJV).  When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus”.

Isaiah the prophet tells us, “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NKJV). Isaiah again tells us, ” Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14 NKJV).  Matthew teaches us that Immanuel means “God with us” Matthew 1:23 NKJV).  Luke tells us, “that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35 NKJV).

Ever wonder how many pounds and inches the baby Jesus was? Whenever there is a birth the announcement is given on the gender, the pounds and the inches. The Bible doesn’t tell us this information but it does tell us a number of the names of this baby boy: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, Immanuel, Son of God. There are a number of songs that we sing that list these names. But with all these names Joseph and Mary named the baby only one name: Jesus. Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua, which means the LORD saves.

In His name we have life, “but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31 NKJV). In His name we can perform miracles, “by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus” (Acts 4:30 NKJV). In His name we are washed, sanctified and justified, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11 NKJV).

We are commanded to believe in His name, “And this is His commandment:  that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment” (1 John 3:23 NKJV). Paul assures us, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth” (Philippians 2:10 NKJV).

When the angel told Mary what she was to name the child the angel knew what he was doing. It is His name that gives us authority, it is His name that gives us healing, and it is His name that protects us. The baby was given the name above all names, Jesus.

Child of God – what’s in a name? In this name is everything you can ever want, desire or think. Jesus, Himself, tells us, “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:14 NKJV).  We have precious promises in the name of Jesus. But the most important of all the promises is the one Paul wrote, “that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:12 NKJV).  We carry the name of Jesus in us and as He is glorified in us then we give Him back all the glory. Come let us exalt His name forever, “For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name”(Luke 1:49 NKJV).

Our prayer:
Lord, every time I say your name I’m calling you my savior. And every time I do that I put myself under your divine protection and the enemy can’t touch me. And my prayers are also wrapped in it so they can be answered as you granted me the access to the Father’s presence. Thank you for the great power that is in your name! Amen.

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you
