“who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness–by whose stripes you were healed”. (1 Peter 2:24 NKJV)
“Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.” (Matthew 27:26 NKJV)

“So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.” (Mark 15:15 NKJV)

“So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him” (John 19:1 NKJV).

God tells us that He hates iniquity, “The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity” (Psalm 5:5 NKJV).  He hates iniquity so much that God has a special punishment for it, “Then I will punish their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with stripes” (Psalm 89:32 NKJV). At no point did God ever change His mind regarding the punishment for iniquity and His hatred of it, according to His word iniquity must be punished by stripes.

The Romans used a whip that is called a “cat-of-9-tails” which was a handle that had nine leather straps attached to it. Imbedded in the leather were bits of bone or pottery so that when the whip hit the flesh the bit would dig into the flesh like a hook and when the whip was jerked backward the bit would tear the flesh off the back of the one being whipped. This was called a scourging and the count of the lashes was 39. When Pilate could not control the crowd he gave up and sent Jesus to be scourged then to be crucified. Did Pilate have a reason for this? No, he just sent Jesus for the scourging then to His death. However, God had a reason for this scourging, “All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6 NKJV). The reason why Jesus was whipped was to take the punishment for our iniquity. Did it work? “You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins” (Psalm 85:2 NIV).

Child of God – It has been said that there are only 39 diseases in the world. Many variations of a disease, for example there may be many types of cancer but cancer is the disease. 39 diseases, 39 stripes. In addition to taking away the punishment for all our iniquity Jesus also took upon His back the diseases of the world. Isaiah looked to the future and told us His stripes would heal us, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement
for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:6 NKJV). However, Peter looked to the event and said we are healed, “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness–by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24 NKJV). We moved from are healed to were healed in one great event. We can now say when any disease comes upon us or our loved ones we were healed of whatever afflicts us by the stripes of Jesus and if we will just have faith enough to believe it we will receive the healing that is already ours.

Our prayer:
Lord, thank you for taking the pain upon yourself, in my place. I know that for your sacrifice I am free from sickness and sin. Allow me to see the things that I receive by faith, coming to pass. Amen.

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you.
