“and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head.” (Matthew 27:29 NIV)

“They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.”  (Mark 15:17 NIV)                                                                  “The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head.” (John 19:2 NIV)

Pilate has given in to the wishes of the crowd, washed his hands of the innocent blood of Jesus, and given Him over to the Roman guards to be crucified. The guards who were with Jesus as Pilate questioned Him must have told the others that Jesus was a King so evil enters into the hearts of these men and they mock Jesus. They dress Him in a purple robe, placing it over the back that they just whipped severely, they kneel before him; these guards have never crucified a King before. Then one of the guards gets an idea as he looks at the thorn bushes growing wild in the courtyard, since Jesus is a King why not provide Him with a crown? So, carefully, the guards’ twist the thorn vines together into a circular form and place it on His head. This is not a gentle action; these guards use both hands and all their strength and press these thorns into the skull of Jesus. The thorns that we are used to on rose bushes today are tiny compared to the thorn bushes that these guards had access to, those thorns were similar to tines on a fork, very sharp, very pointy.

The thorns pierced the skull of Jesus, not only causing intense pain and much blood loss, but also pierced His brain. By succumbing to the sadism of these guards Jesus purchased for us healing in our brains and in our minds. By taking the excruciating pain caused by the wearing of these crowns all the way to the cross and leaving it there Jesus took mental illness, brain disorders, brain tumors and other diseases of the mind and brain and provided for us healing of them. By the shedding of His precious blood we have been set free!

Child of God – Paul tells us, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2 NIV). We had a sinful mind but we now have a renewed mind that is a gift of God and God continues to renew our mind as we read and meditate in His word. By the crown of thorns Jesus made a way to transform our minds from death to life, “The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace” (Romans 8:6 NIV). Jesus went to a madman and transformed him completely, “When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid” (Mark 5:15 NIV). Jesus wants you in your right mind, Holy, healthy, free of worry, dedicated completely to Him, ” Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30 NIV). Let us give to Jesus our minds and be transformed as He washes us with the blood He shed for us from the crown of thorns in His head.

Our prayer:
Lord, thank you that you were willing to go through all that suffering so I can be free in many ways, even in my mind, which is a battlefield many times. Thank you that I can come to you every time I’m troubled with something and find peace in you. You are the one who transforms my mind, my thoughts, into yours. Lord help me to have your perspective on things and events in my life. Help me not to lose the spiritual perspective when I’m upset or hurt. Don’t let my emotions to interfere with the right mind I’m supposed to have because of you. Amen.

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you.
