Tamera Alexander in her new book, “to win book coverTo Win Her Favor” Book Two in the Belle Meade Plantation series published by Zondervan  brings us into the life of Maggie Linden.

From the Back Cover:  A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one man who could help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing forever.

An Irishman far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He’s come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and begin farming, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he’d wagered, especially when Maggie Linden’s father makes him an offer he shouldn’t accept yet cannot possibly refuse.

Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the inaugural Peyton Stakes, the richest race ever run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance–and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder–Maggie’s father, aging, yet wily as ever, makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail–Maggie must marry a man she’s never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.

Cullen and Maggie need each other in order to achieve their dreams. But their stubborn, wounded hearts––and the escalating violence from a “secret society” responsible for lynchings and midnight raids––may prove too much for even two determined souls.

Yes, it is true, I am very fond of horses and, if it were possible, I would own a horse ranch. Since this is never going to happen I get to settle for the next best thing which is this book. Welcome to Linden Farms in 1869. It has been four years since the end of the Civil War and The South is still trying to recover. Cullen and Maggie are two of the most well drawn characters that I have ever come across. Cullen is experiencing all the prejudice against the Irish and actually has been asked to leave town. Maggie can actually race her horse at a time when there are no women jockeys. Now her father has set it up so that if these two want to fulfill their dreams they are going to have to get married. Ms. Alexander has written one exciting book that covers quite a lot of territory. History, Horses, Prejudice, Horse racing and romance this book has it all. “To Win Her Favor” may be Ms. Alexander’s best book yet.  Tamera Alexander has written a well done novel that I recommend highly.

Book Review: “Every Bride Needs a Groom” by Janice Thompson

Janice Thompson in her new book, “Every Bride Needs a Groom book coverEvery Bride Needs a Groom” Book One in the Brides with Style series published by Revell introduces us to Katie Fisher.

From the back cover:  Somewhere in a sea of tulle and taffeta, satin and crepe, Katie Fisher needs to find a key ingredient of the perfect wedding–the groom.

Small-town girl Katie Fisher is busy planning her fairy-tale wedding. Sure, her boyfriend hasn’t managed to pop the question just yet, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t enter a contest in Texas Bride magazine to win the dress of her dreams, right? Anyway, she’s sure he’ll be getting down on one knee any time now. And a one-of-a-kind designer dress doesn’t just fall out of the sky right when you need it.

But when Katie’s boyfriend takes a job in another town and breaks up with her–on the very same day she wins her dream dress–her world is turned upside down. Dare she go to Dallas to claim her prize? And will the hunky pro basketball player who runs the beyond-swanky bridal shop–yeah, you read that right–discover her humiliating secret if she does?

Don’t you just love the title, “Every Bride Needs a Groom”? I believe for someone to be a bride a man has had to propose first. Katie now has the dress but the man she thought was going to propose left her. Now she has to go and get the dress but what is she going to do with it? Janice Thompson kicks off her new series with a bang. It really does look as though all is lost and Katie is going to have to suffer some real humiliation and shame. However God is involved in this story and He never wants us to have that, instead He wants for us to experience joy and victory. This book is all about family.  All the characters are likable and Ms. Thompson has a way of bringing you into the story and making the characters lives  very real. This is a very enjoyable read and I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Colleen Coble in her new book “A Heart's Obsession book coverA Heart’s Obsession” Book Two in the Journey Of The Heart series published by Thomas Nelson takes Sara Montgomery to Fort Laramie, Wyoming.

From the back cover:   Will Sarah’s journey west lead her back into the arms of the one man she can trust?

When her father succumbs to a long illness, Sarah Montgomery is freed from duty to family. At last she can be with the love of her life, Rand Campbell, who has gone out west to Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Sarah and her younger brother Joel make the arduous journey filled with hope.

But at Fort Laramie, the reception Sarah meets isn’t what she had hoped for. Her friend Amelia is thrilled to have her, but Rand seems to be in the clutches of Jessica DuBois, the scheming daughter of the post commander.

Sarah resolves to remain at Fort Laramie and try to win Rand back. But things will get tougher before they get easier . . . especially when her ex-fiancé Ben Croftner arrives in Wyoming, obsessed with having her back in his arms.

“A Heart’s Obsession” is book two in the Journey Of The Heart series. If you really want to know just what is going on you need to read book one, “A Heart’s Disguise”. Rand has gone to Wyoming while Sarah stays with her father. Then he dies freeing Sarah to go find Rand and marry him. And that is the set-up for this book. All the elements are there as Sarah arrives and Rand has messed everything up. Just when you think it cannot get any worse the ex-fiance of Sarah shows up. There is a whole lot going on in the ninety-eight pages of story that you are going to want to read for yourself. Sarah and Rand are such wonderful characters and we get so emotionally involved with them it seems as though we have been friends with them forever.  This is a fast-paced read that will keep you guessing as to what is really going on.  I recommend this book highly!
