“Your Enemies Shall Fall By The Sword Before You”

“Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall by the sword before you. (Leviticus 26:8 NKJV)

The Philistines have camped against Isreal and are now in charge and the first thing they did was to remove all the blacksmiths so that there was no one to make swords.  The only individuals who have swords in all of Israel is King Saul and his son, Jonathan.  “Now it happened one day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. (1 Samuel 14:1)  Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us. For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few.” So his armorbearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart.” Then Jonathan said, “Very well, let us cross over to these men, and we will show ourselves to them. If they say thus to us, “Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place and not go up to them. But if they say thus, “Come up to us,’ then we will go up. For the LORD has delivered them into our hand, and this will be a sign to us.” So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden.” Then the men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something.” Jonathan said to his armorbearer, “Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”  And Jonathan climbed up on his hands and knees with his armorbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan. And as he came after him, his armorbearer killed them.  That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armorbearer made was about twenty men within about half an acre of land. (1 Samuel 14:6-14 NKJV)

Between Jonathan and his armorbearer there is only one sword and the two men attack the camp of the Philistines and start to wipe them out.  Because of this attack these two men put such fear into the camp that the Philistines start to fight and kill each other causing a great commotion until King Saul and his army can reach the camp and finish the deliverance of Israel from the Philistines.

Child of God – Back then Jonathan had a sword to attack his oppressors and he had an armorbearer so how does that apply to us today?  We could probably be arrested if we walked around with a sword in our hand today.  Yet God has provided each of us not only a sword but armor and an armorbearer.  The sword is the Word of God and the armorbearer is the Holy Spirit, “and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; (Ephesians 6:17 NKJV)  The sword is of the Spirit and the Holy Spirit is often represented as a servant or armorbearer in the Bible.  And what is the armor that he carries that we must put on?  “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:13-17 NKJV)  So we have a sword, we have armor and we have an armorbearer, who is the Holy Spirit, who goes with us into battles to slay our enemies, “his armorbearer killed them. (1 Samuel 14:14 NKJV)  All we need to do is speak the Word of God against our spiritual enemies and they will fall before us.  Look at Jesus our example in all things, “Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. (Revelation 19:15 NKJV)  If Jesus does it we should do it as well.  We just need to speak the Word against whatever afflicts us and it will be overcome!  It is written, “your enemies shall fall by the sword before you. (Leviticus 26:8 NKJV)

Our prayer:
Lord,  Amen.

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
