Cynthia Ruchti, in her new book, “As Waters Gone By book coverAs Waters Gone By” published by Abingdon Press takes us into the life of Emmalyn Ross.

From the back cover:   Are the walls around her heart more daunting than the other barriers separating her from the man she married?

Emmalyn Ross never thought a person could feel this alone. Sustaining a marriage with a man who’s not by her side is no easy task, especially since her husband currently resides behind impenetrable prison walls. His actions stole her heart’s desire and gave their relationship a court-mandated five-year time-out. What didn’t fall apart that night fell apart in the intervening years.

Now, on a self-imposed exile to Madeline Island—one of the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior—Emmalyn starts rehabbing an old hunting cottage they’d purchased when life made sense. Restoring it may put a roof over her head, but a home needs more than a roof and walls, just as a marriage needs more than vows and a license. With only a handful of months before her husband is released, Emmalyn must figure out if and how they can ever be a couple again. And his silence isn’t helping.

Change and restoration. You would think that these would be easy to accept and handle. The truth is far from it. Things are going to change Max is going to get out of prison and be restored, not only back to society, but to their marriage. Emmalyn is going to change but she doesn’t know how and being restored back to her husband is controversial. So she heads off to Madeline Island. There she starts to get her head together and restore an old hunting cottage. Change and restoration are so wonderfully explored and examined. And it is not often that you find a story where a spouse is incarcerated. Emmalyn is a wonderful character that you wish could be your friend and that you could help in her moment of crisis.  Ms. Ruchti has given us lots to think about.  This is a wonderful page turner that you will not want to put down until you are finished.
