MaryLu Tyndall in her new book, “reckoning book coverThe Reckoning” Book Five in the Legacy of the King’s Pirates series published by Ransom Press introduces us to Morgan Shaw.

From the back cover:  When Morgan Shaw crept into the hold of an old pirate ship replica at San Diego’s Annual Tall Ship Festival, her only intention was to avoid the guy who had just dumped her and who was now boarding the ship with two women on his arm. What she didn’t expect was to wake up aboard a real pirate ship three-hundred years in the past. But of course, it wasn’t real. Her wealthy father had obviously staged it all in an effort to get her mind off her upcoming chemo. Or had he?

Pirate Rowan Dutton seeks enough treasure to repay a debt to his sister and reinstate the Dutton name among British Jamaican Society. He is but one major haul away from accomplishing his goal when a strange woman appears on his ship and causes him to lose his prey. Despite his anger, he is enthralled with the little minx, her strange clothing, odd speech, and her insistence that they are all actors playing a charade paid for by her father.

Yet when the brazen little lady divulges Rowan’s secret to a longtime nemesis, events are triggered that could cost them both their lives and change the course of history forever.

Let me start off by saying that I believe that “The Reckoning” is the best book, so far, from the pen of MaryLu Tyndall. This is the first book that has ever offered us time travel. At first I was a little hesitant. I wasn’t sure that time travel would play well with pirates. I worried for nothing. It plays great with pirates! All of the elements of high adventure are here:  on land, on the sea there is action, adventure, suspense, swordplay as well as bravery and honor. Now there is a 21st Century woman, Morgan, back in time to 1694 on board Captain Dutton’s The Reckoning. Only she doesn’t believe it. That is where all the fun comes in. Then just to make it more interesting Ms. Tyndall gave us a romance.  The highlight of this book is faith. It is Morgan, and her belief in God, that will keep them both alive so that God can fulfill His purpose. There is a lot going on in “The Reckoning” which is good because it keeps you interested and flipping pages as fast as you can read. Don’t start this book late at night because it will be very difficult to put it down or stop thinking about it.  I recommend this book highly and am greatly looking forward to the next book from this highly talented author.

Mike Hollow in his new book, “Direct Hit book coverDirect Hit” Book One in The Blitz Detective series published by Monarch Books introduces us to Detective Inspector John Jago.

From the back cover:  The jagged blast of high explosives rips through the evening air. In the sky over East London the searchlights criss-cross in search of the enemy.

On the first night of the Blitz, a corpse is discovered in a van in the back streets of West Ham. Detective Inspector John Jago recognizes the dead man as local Justice of the Peace Charles Villiers. But then a German bomb obliterates all evidence.

Villiers, not a popular man, was both powerful and feared. As the sirens wail, the detective must start matching motive to opportunity – and it doesn’t help when his boss foists an intrusive American journalist on him.

Jago soon discovers the dead man held many secrets, some reaching back to World War I. A lot of people wished Villiers dead – and an air raid is a good time to conceal a murder.

History and mystery are a perfect combination to really get the blood going. World War II and the bombing raids on London called The Blitz, (which is why Jago is The Blitz Detective). During one of the raids Jago and his partner find a body which they recognize. However the entire crime scene is destroyed by falling bombs. The victim was not a well-liked individual and the list of suspects grows. Now Jago has to go through the possible suspects with all their motives to figure out which one of them did it.  “Direct Hit” is a very exciting book that will keep you engrossed in the characters as well as life in England in 1940.  I think Mike Hollow is an extremely talented writer who really knows how to tell a story that will grab you and keep you flipping pages until you find out who did it. I am already looking forward to the next book.

Book Review: “Warrior Chicks” by Holly Wagner

Holly Wagner in her new book, “Warrior Chicks book coverWarrior Chicks” published by Revell gives us Rising Strong When Life Wants to Take You Down.

From the Back Cover:  There is a lot in life we cannot control–a cancer diagnosis, the choices our children make, a spouse who leaves, disappointments in our career, a broken heart. But in those tragedies, big and small, we still have a choice:

Lie down and give in or stand up and fight.

In this inspiring call to arms against victimhood, Holly Wagner challenges women to enlist as Warrior Chicks. She shows women that they are beautiful just the way they are, they are destined to be overcomers in this life, and that the battle is already won for us. She shares the secrets of being equipped to fight the good fight and do more than just survive. As one who has battled many things in her life, including breast cancer, Holly shows how you can be either a casualty of the pain or a warrior who overcomes.

So what’s it going to be?

Holly Wagner found out that Proverbs 31, “rise while it is yet night” has nothing to do with the time of day you get up. Ms. Wagner found out that it has everything to do with being a woman who “rises” in the midst of hard times. When darkness and chaos abound, the woman, the warrior – you – rise.  This is what Warrior Chicks is all about. In eleven chapters Ms. Wagner takes women on a journey to see that no woman has been called to be a casualty. All women have been called to be warriors and that no one can take what is thrown at them and give up.  Warrior is an attitude. There is even a study guide at the end. It would also be a great gift for friends and family so that they be helped as well.
