Yesterday was Halloween; a day when we dress the children (and sometimes ourselves) in bizarre costumes, go to parties where we come as someone else and eat too much candy. It is a night of deviltry. And why not? For most people the devil doesn’t exist or he exists as a medium-build
man with a goatee who wears red, has pointy horns on his head, cloven hooves, a serpent tail, smells of sulfur and carries a pitchfork, also red. You can see and smell him coming from miles away. When the devil comes he comes with a contract; he will perform certain actions or provide desired objects in exchange for the person’s soul. In all the books, movies or TV shows the person always is wise enough to include an escape clause in the contract that should the person want out of the contract before the expiration date the person gets to keep what was provided as well as the soul and the devil is out of luck. Mostly the devil is an object of humor as evidenced in the movies in the theaters now or he is a foe easily beaten. Very rarely is he shown where he wins as those really are terrifying. As the devil is portrayed in this manner why then shouldn’t we dress up in his costume and witches and vampires and such?
Because none of what you have just read is true! It is a lie conceived in Hell and birthed in man that man will be lulled into a stupor and not resist a ruthless enemy who hates man’s very existence. 1 Peter 5:8 warns us, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”. This is not an object of ridicule this is a man-eater! As for the business of the contract where man can sign over his soul for certain privileges or things this is utter nonsense in the way it is presented on tv. But there are people indeed that make covenants with Satan dedicating their lives to his service in exchange for worldly things. Satan is the prince of this world and has control over the earth and over the people on earth from day one. This is the reason why Jesus came and died so that we who accept Him as Lord and Savior will receive eternal life. Jesus states very plainly in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. Jesus again states very plainly in John 8:44, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies”.
The devil is a deceiver and he doesn’t wear red he comes as an “angel of light”. Yes, he is defeated but he is our enemy who is cunning and ruthless. We should not dress up in costume or ridicule him in our movies, books or TV shows. In so doing we are opening a door for him to come in and destroy us. We need to be careful. We need to be wise.
Child of God – God loves us! Let us always remember that, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). We do not need to fear but to rejoice in the great victory that God has provided for us that believe in Him and in His son, Jesus. We do not celebrate a day of deviltry, we sing, “This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it Psalm 118:24).
Lord, open our eyes so we don’t get deceived with the tricks of the enemy when he disguises himself as an angel of light. Make us wise and obedient in all the ways we are supposed to walk pleasing you and not conforming to the world. Amen.
If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you.
