John Gardner in his new book, “Never Send Flowers book coverNever Send Flowers” Book Thirteen in the James Bond series published by Pegasus Books LLC gives us another adventure with British Secret Service Agent James Bond.

From the back cover:  “There’s something about the March girl that they’ve got no intention of telling us. Just watch your back, James…”

An Italian General. An English MP. A Russian novelist. An American Spymaster.

In different corners of the world four high-profile figures are assassinated in less than a week. Nobody links the deaths but one thing is certain: each of them has been stalked, sought out and killed with care and preparation. Then a sinister connection is established: a single, blood-tipped rose is sent to each funeral and an unremarkable female agent is murdered in Switzerland.

When MI5 come to MI6 to ask for help M brings in his best. At first, a weekend abroad seems tempting to James Bond: especially when he’s paired with Flicka von Grusse, a gorgeous Swiss intelligence officer. But this is a perilous assignment that starts with the mysterious actor David Dragonpol and leads them to Athens, Milan and on to EuroDisney … and an explosive climax.

While James Bond may be a super spy he is not perfect and, as such, does make mistakes. I find that when he makes those mistakes it draws me into the story better. There is an assassin running around loose who went from targeting high-profile targets to an MI5 operative. Now Bond is trying to link them all together, find and then stop this killer before he can assassinate more. In the process he has a face-off at EuroDisney and this just might get him killed. This is the story that introduces us to Fredericka von Grusse, “Flicka”, a gorgeous Swiss intelligence officer. She really is a perfect match for Bond and I am looking forward to seeing more of her in the future. “Never Send Flowers” grabs you with the storyline and keeps you flipping pages as fast as possible. Is it perfect? No. However it is Bond and that is what makes it all right.  Don’t start this book late at night because you are going to want to finish it before you go to bed. I am so looking forward to the next adventure with Captain James Bond.
