Max Allan Collins in his book, “Quarry book coverQuarry” Book One in the Quarry series published by Titan Books introduces us to Quarry.

From the Back Cover: This is it – Where Quarry’s story all began. And another life ended…

The assignment was simple: stake out the man’s home and kill him. Easy work for a professional like Quarry. But when things go horribly wrong, Quarry finds himself with a new mission: learn who hired him, and make the bastard pay.

The longest-running series from Max Allan Collins, author of Road to Perdition, and the first ever to feature a hitman as the main character, the Quarry novels tell the story of a paid assassin with a rebellious streak and an unlikely taste for justice. Once a Marine sniper, Quarry found a new home stateside with a group of contract killers. But some men aren’t made for taking orders – and when Quarry strikes off on his own, god help the man on the other side of his nine-millimeter…

For me this is the first time that the protagonist is a professional hitman. It is definite Quarry gets paid to assassinate others, doesn’t matter who as long as Quarry gets paid for his services. Under normal conditions that should make him a bad guy. It appears that back in 1971 the moral climate here was changing and certain things were being allowed. With that in mind Quarry becomes a sort of gray character, not really good but not really bad either. Something goes wrong and Quarry sets out to both avenge and revenge the situation. This is one super exciting book. Mr. Collins has given us a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, flipping pages as fast as you can read them just trying to keep up with this wild ride story. Cross, double cross, a hit-man with a heart, this story is full of interesting characters, most interesting of which is Quarry himself.
