Shelley Shepard Gray in her new book, “A Son's Vow book coverA Son’s Vow” Book One in The Charmed Amish Life series published by Avon Inspire takes us into the life of Darla Kurtz.

From the back cover:  In the first book of New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray’s new Charmed Amish Life series, a young man and woman must heal their families—and themselves—after a terrible tragedy, but when their friendship gives way to deeper feelings, can their newfound love survive against the odds?

Three months ago, everything changed for Darla Kurtz and her family. Darla’s father was responsible for a terrible fire at Charm’s lumber mill that killed five Amish men. Though her father lost his life, too, the town of Charm hasn’t looked at her family the same since. Now her brother’s anger at the town is spilling over onto Darla, and she has the bruises to prove it. The accident already cost five lives, but if something doesn’t change soon, Darla fears it will cost her—and her family—even more.

Suddenly, Lukas Kinsinger, the head of his father’s lumber mill who is responsible for taking care of his three siblings, feels more overwhelmed than ever. He has also never felt more alone—especially with the new tension between him and Darla, who was his close friend before the accident changed everything. But when he learns of her troubles at home, Lukas knows he can’t simply stand by and watch. Someone has to help her before another tragedy occurs—and that someone is him.

As Lukas and Darla attempt to repair their families, they discover something deeper than friendship growing between them. But will the pain of the past overcome any chance of future happiness?

Don’t you just enjoy the town’s name of Charm? Despite all the tragedy that happens there, there still is a charm to it that does not go away. The fire at the Lumber Mill affected everyone especially Darla and her brother because her father was one of the victims. Her brother is having a difficult time with his father’s death and he is expressing his trauma with rage and violence and Darla is getting bruised because of it. Now the healing has to begin and like the proverbial Phoenix from mythology new lives have to begin. Ms. Gray has given us real people in Darla and Lukas and watching them grow individually and then together is a real treat. “A Son’s Vow” is an exceptional story with exceptional characters that you care for and so want them to get together. I can hardly wait for book two to see where Ms. Gray is going to take this series.
