For the benefit of our international readers today we celebrate Memorial Day in the United States. Memorial Day is the day when we remember the men and women who lost their lives serving our country. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was established in 1868 to commemorate the dead from the Civil War.
God as a way for us to remember because we, as humans, have a way to forget things and forget them quickly established a means of memorial. God, knowing all these things, commanded us to tell our children and their children so that they would know the goodness and faithfulness of our God.
God gave this command to Moses concerning the ephod that his brother, Aaron, would wear as high priest, “Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel in the order of their birth–six names on one stone and the remaining six on the other. Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings and fasten them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear the names on his shoulders as a memorial before the LORD” (Exodus 28:9-12 NIV).
These two onyx stones with the names of the twelve sons of Israel were to serve as buttons fastening the shoulder pieces of the ephod. Aaron, as high priest, was bearing the names of the tribes in his ministrations before the Lord that he would keep them in remembrance as the representative of all Israel and an advocate for them. The stones were mounted in gold filigree settings to show how valuable each name is before God. Aaron, as high priest, is a symbol of Jesus presenting to Himself and to His Father a glorious church, “that He might present her to Himself a glorious church” (Ephesians 5:26 NKJV). They are worn upon the high priests shoulders as the government is upon the shoulders of the Lord, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV).
What markers do you have in your life? What miracles has God done for you? Who have you shared them with lately? On this day of Memorial, if you would like to make a marker of an email, send us whatever you feel the Lord would have you tell us. We will not share any messages we receive but we would be glad to hear the memorial markers in your life.
Child of God – God tells us that no longer does the high priest have to wear precious stones on his shoulders engraved with our names. God, Himself, has engraved our names on His hands, “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me” (Isaiah 49:16 NIV). Our High Priest, Jesus, has the nail prints in His hands that bears each of our names and they are ever before Him. Let us rejoice and praise Him and bless His name.
Lord, thank you for having me engraved in your hands. You have given me so many “memorial stones” from all the things that you have done in my life. But one of them that renews itself every time is that you are my comfort in every adverse situation, pain or lacking. You are my strength and you are my fortress, that I carry on me all the time. Amen.
If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you.
