Steven Axelrod in his new book, “nantucket grand book coverNantucket Grand” Book Three in the Henry Kennis Mystery series published by Poisoned Pen Press gives us another adventure with Henry Kennis.

From the back cover:   During a long winter and short, chilly spring, a series of disturbing incidents rock the small resort island of Nantucket. A Land Bank executive dies in a suspicious hunting accident, a prominent local family’s historic summer cottage burns down in an arson fire, and a teenage girl lies comatose from a drug overdose.

When spring turns to summer and the tourists flood the island, the mysterious cycle of violence spins faster. A young Jamaican boy is found dead in the harbor, a sex-for-drugs pornography ring is exposed, and a beloved local hero is murdered in cold blood. Could all of these events be part of the same sinister conspiracy?

Poetry-writing Police Chief Henry Kennis, back for his third case in NANTUCKET GRAND by Steven Axelrod, doubts it. But his new girlfriend, Jane Stiles, an author of cozy mysteries, is certain that all these terrible events are connected. In one of her books, they would all be related. Henry scoffs, but as the cords pull tighter, drawing him into a scandal that would change Nantucket forever, he begins to realize that Jane might be right, after all. But is it already too late?

The case comes to shattering conclusion as a vengeful father, a damaged beauty, a ruthless billionaire, and a stone-cold killer converge on the 150-foot luxury yacht that gives the book its title. Henry, putting his own life at stake, must take desperate action to set things right and save the world-his world-the little comma of scrub pine and dune grass he has come to call home.

I have to admire the mind of Steven Axelrod that he can come out with this highly complicated cases and let me say that Mr. Axelrod has come out with his best story yet. Mr. Axelrod has provided us with a marvelous character in Henry Kennis and in Jane Stiles. It is so much fun reading about them and getting involved with them. The story hums along at a fast pace as they work to figure out just what is going on. “Nantucket Grand” is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. I am so looking forward to reading the next adventure from this highly talented author.

Book Review: “The Ringmaster’s Wife” by Kristy Cambron

Kristy Cambron in her new book “The Ringmaster's Wife book coverThe Ringmaster’s Wife” Book Three in the Hidden Masterpiece series published by Thomas Nelson introduces us to Mable Ringling.

From the back cover:   An ounce of courage.

A leap of faith.

Together, they propel two young women to chase a new life—one that’s reimagined from what they might have become.

In turn-of-the-century America, a young girl dreams of a world that stretches beyond the confines of a quiet life on the family farm. With little more than her wit and a cigar box of treasures, Mable steps away from all she knows, seeking the limitless marvels of the Chicago World’s Fair. There, a chance encounter triggers her destiny—a life with a famed showman by the name of John Ringling.

A quarter of a century later, Lady Rosamund Easling boards a ship to America as a last adventure before her arranged marriage. There, the twenties are roaring, and the rich and famous gather at opulent, Gatsby-esque parties. The Jazz Age has arrived, and with it, the golden era of the American circus, whose queen is none other than the enigmatic Mable Ringling.

When Rosamund’s path crosses with Mable’s and the Ringlings’ glittering world, she makes the life-altering decision to leave behind a comfortable future of estates and propriety, choosing instead the nomadic life of a trick rider in the Ringling Brothers’ circus.

A novel that is at once captivating, deeply poignant, and swirling with exquisite historical details of a bygone world, The Ringmaster’s Wife will escort readers into the center ring, with its bright lights, exotic animals, and a dazzling performance that can only be described as the Greatest Show on Earth!

Ms. Cambron, up until now, has had each book live up to the series title, Hidden Masterpiece, but, I feel, with this one she has outdone herself. This is historical fiction at its finest. Ms. Cambron shines her author spotlight on the Ringling Brothers’ circus, Mrs. Ringling as well as Lady Rosamund Easling. Ms. Cambron gets us involved with the lives of these two young women and in the situations that they find themselves in. We root for them, we cry for them, we want them to succeed. Ms. Cambron’s characters come alive off these pages. Plus we are taken to the Circus! I was really sorry when the story finished because I had to let them go. I am so looking forward to the next book from this highly talented author.

Book Review: “Medical Judgment” by Richard L. Mabry, M.D.

Richard L. Mabry, M.D. in his new book “Medical Judgment book coverMedical Judgment” published by Abingdon Press takes us into the life of Dr. Sarah Gordon.

From the back cover:   Dr. Sarah Gordon lost her husband and daughter. Now, she’s about to lose her life.

Someone is after Dr. Sarah Gordon. They’ve stalked her and set a fire at her home. Trying to recover from the traumatic deaths of her husband and infant daughter is tough enough, but she has no idea what will come next.

Her late husband’s best friend and a recovering alcoholic detective are trying to solve the mystery before it’s too late, but both appear to be vying for her affection as well. Sarah finds herself in constant fear as the process plays out.

As the threats on her life continue to escalate, so do the questions: Who is doing this? Why are they after her? And with her only help being unreliable suitors in competition with each other, whom can she really trust?

There are individuals out there who actually believe that there are others who are out to get them, sad, but true. Here is the really sad part, for a few of those individuals it happens to be true. Sarah Gordon is one of the individuals it is true for. You are going to start off trusting no one and then, somehow, just when you think Dr. Mabry couldn’t do it, he twists the suspense and you trust even less. Dr. Mabry really knows how to write a thriller that will grab your attention and then keep it until he decides to let go. I think “Medical Judgment” is Dr. Mabry’s best medical thriller to date. Action, mystery and suspense these are the ingredients of “Medical Judgment”. Turn off the TV, unplug the computer, put aside the housework you are not going to want to do anything but read this book until the end and enjoy yourself in the process.  Dr. Mabry has written another exciting book that most certainly is a huge winner!
