In Your Departure with Love

Dear friends and faithful readers,

This is Alicia writing, some of you know me some don’t, I am Vic’s wife. I have the sad duty to let you know my beloved husband Vic went to be with the Lord a week ago Sunday Aug. 28, 2016. I will not comment here on the circumstances that happened that day but just say that his health was broken and he struggled with different health issues for a few years, this year being the worst. Nevertheless, after all the things he survived, his departure was unexpected.

He loved writing the reviews for this blog and took them very seriously. I thank in his name all the publicists that trusted in him with the reviews as well as the authors, whom he was delighted to receive comments from. And to all his readers because he would have not have the success he had without your interest.

I will keep this blog open for those reviews that can still be helpful to all, he wrote up until the day before he left. Unfortunately there will not be new reviews, I don’t have the same gift he had for that, but every so often I will post things that he wrote or whatever the Lord inspires me to write.

We will have a memorial service this Sept.9 to celebrate his life in Irvine, CA. Also, I have started a fund raising campaign to help me pay medical bills he left behind. The information is below for those who wish to send a donation in lieu of flowers.

Thank you for everything and God bless you,

Alicia

Book Review: “Chase The Lion” by Mark Batterson

Mark Batterson in his new book, “Chase The Lion book coverChase The Lion” published by Multnomah tells us If Your Dream Doesn’t Scare You, It’s Too Small.

From the back cover:  Run “TO” the Roar!
When the image of a man-eating beast travels through the optic nerve and into the visual cortex, the brain sends the body a simple but urgent message: run away! That s what normal people do, but not lion chasers. Rather than seeing a five hundred pound problem, they see an opportunity for God to show up and show His power..
“Chase the Lion” is more than a catch phrase; it s a radically different approach to life. It s only when we stop fearing failure that we can fully seize opportunity by the mane. With grit and gusto, “New York Times” bestselling author Mark Batterson delivers a bold message to everyone with a big dream.
Quit playing it safe and start running” towards” the roar!
This is a wake-up call to stop living as if the purpose was to simply arrive safely at death. Our dreams should scare us. They should be so big that without God they are impossible to achieve. Quit running away from what you re afraid of.
Chase the lion!
Change the world!

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”1 Peter 5:8 The Apostle Peter tells us the devil behaves towards us as if he were a lion. Pastor Batterson applies the verse from 2 Samuel 23:20 that we should take the chase to the lion, that we should defeat it. The devil is like a lion. Peter is comparing the devil to a lion who prowls around. Benaiah takes the chase to the lion and kills it. Now we know how we should behave towards the devil. In twenty-one chapters Pastor Batterson explores how we need to get realigned with the Word of God.  Once we vacate our old ways of thinking and acting then we need to be all in on the new ways without carrying over some of the polluted thoughts and actions we currently have.  Pastor Batterson challenges us to stretch ourselves using the Word of God and convinces us to get off the bench and in the game.  I think that everyone should have a copy of this book and give it as a gift to friends and family so that they can be properly aligned as well.  Everyone will be better off for it.

Book Review: “The Loyal Heart” by Shelley Shepard Gray

Shelley Shepard Gray in her new book, “Loyal Heart book coverThe Loyal Heart” Book One in The Lone Star Hero’s Love Story series published by Zondervan takes us into the life of Robert Truax.

From the back cover:  Robert came to Galveston to fulfill his promise to a dying man and look after his widow. He didn’t expect to find love in the unlikeliest of places.

Robert Truax, former Second Lieutenant and Confederate officer in the Civil War, made a promise to his comrade Phillip Markham. If anything happened to Phillip, Robert would look after his beloved wife, Miranda. She was his life, his world, his everything.

After the war, Robert is left to pick up the pieces and fulfill his pact. When he arrives at Miranda’s home in Galveston, Texas, things are worse than he imagined. Phillip’s name has been dragged through the mud, everyone in town believes him to be a traitor, and his widow is treated as an outcast. Even more disturbing is her emotional well-being. Miranda seems hopeless, lost, and so very alone.

Robert had thought his duty would be simple. He would help Miranda as quickly as possible in order to honor a promise. But the moment Robert laid eyes on her, his plans changed. He’s mesmerized by her beauty and yearns to help her in any way he can.

He makes it his duty to protect Miranda, turn her reputation around, and to find some way to help her smile again. But it doesn’t prove to be an easy task—Robert knows something about Phillip that could shake Miranda to the core and alter her view of the man she thought she knew so well.

Ms. Gray has given us real people in Robert and Miranda and watching them grow individually and then together is a real treat. There is a lot going on in this story where Robert has to come to Galveston to protect Miranda’s good name and make sure she does not lose the family house. “The Loyal Heart” is an exceptional story with exceptional characters that you care for and so want them to get together. Don’t start this book late at night because you will not want to go to sleep until you have finished it. I can hardly wait for book two to see where Ms. Gray is going to take this series.
