Gabriel Valjan in his new book, “Turning To Stone book coverTurning To Stone” Book Four in the Roma Series published by Winter Goose Publishing gives us another adventure with Alabaster Black aka Bianca Nerini.

From the back cover:  Alabaster Black aka Bianca Nerini returns as an investigation into a public official’s assassination pits Bianca and her friends against a backdrop of financial speculation, female assassins on motorcycles, and the Camorra—the most ruthless of Italian organized crime gangs—in Gabriel Valjan’s TURNING TO STONE, the fourth book of the highly praised Roma series.

En route to a secret meeting, Aldo Giurlani—the regional commissioner of Lombardy in northern Italy and a specialist on organized crime—is assassinated in the middle of a public square.

More mysterious is the package sent to Giurlani’s hand-picked team of five top investigators within the Guardia di Finanza (GdF), the Italian law enforcement agency that investigates illegal financial transactions, from money laundering to drug trafficking. Within the package are five copies of a book entitled Man of Smoke written by Aldo Palazzeschi.

Then there is Bianca’s tenuous online contact with a mysterious online contact known as Loki, who delivers a cryptic message to her, takes on a new twist with the appearance of a brilliant young obsessive-compulsive man who joins her team.

Complicating matters even further, old enemies and, more problematically, Alabaster’s former employer—Rendition, a murky covert U.S. government agency that does more than just investigate financial crimes—still have grudges to bear against her.

As new mysteries unfold, Bianca’s group quickly discovers that Naples might just be the most dangerous city in Italy.

Readers looking for a suspenseful thriller with mysterious twists and turns abounding will love Gabriel Valjan’s TURNING TO STONE.

M. Valjan has consistently in every book in this series so far improved not only the stories but has hiked the suspense as well. This book is no exception. I had no idea that the Camorra existed and that they were so evil. You would not think that a forensic investigator could get into such life threatening situation. Plus there is the possibility that Rendition has not truly forgiven her from the first book. Counterfeit euros and bonds, anagrams, undercover detectives, and international intrigue are just some of what Bianca has to deal with. This is a thriller mystery that will keep you flipping pages as fast as you can read to keep up with what is going on. I was guessing until the very end. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

Book Review: “Deadlock” By DiAnn Mills

DiAnn Mills in her new book, “Deadlock book coverDeadlock” Book Three in the FBI: Houston series published by Tyndale House Publishers gives us an adventure with Bethany Sanchez and Thatcher Graves.

From the back cover:   This could be the case of their careers…if they can survive long enough to solve it.

Two homicides have rocked the city of Houston. Are they the work of a serial killer, or is a copycat trying to get away with murder?

That is the question facing Special Agent Bethany Sanchez, who is eager for her new assignment in violent crimes but anxious about meeting her new partner. Special Agent Thatcher Graves once arrested her brother, and he has a reputation for being a maverick. Plus, their investigative styles couldn’t be more opposite: he operates on instinct, while she goes by the book.

When hot leads soon fizzle out, their differences threaten to leave them deadlocked. But an attempt on their lives turns up the heat and brings them closer together, and a third victim might yield the clue that will help them zero in on a killer. This could be the case of their careers . . . if they can survive long enough to solve it.

What is more dangerous a serial killer or a one-time murderer trying to mask his actions by making it look as though the serial killer did it? Bethany has been around murder before but she is new to violent crimes so she is, temporarily, out of her league. Thatcher is a long time pro and these two have a history already. Now these two not only have to work together but they have to stay alive to solve this case.  Bethany and Thatcher are authentic, well-defined characters and so is the way they handle situations. I think this is Ms. Mills best work yet. Once the action gets going Ms. Mills revs up the thriller quotient considerably which will have you reading and flipping pages as fast as you can.  Don’t start this book late at night because it will be very difficult to put it down. And did I mention there is romance as well?  I recommend this book highly and am greatly looking forward to the next book in the series.
