Linda Evans Shepherd in her new book, “Called To Pray book coverCalled To Pray”  published by Revell gives us Astounding Stories of Answered Prayer.

From the Back Cover:  When you feel a nudge to pray, what will you do?

Most of us have felt it at one time or another: that unexplained prompting in our hearts to stop and pray for a friend, a loved one, or even a stranger. Sometimes we are even awakened from a deep sleep with an even deeper need to go to God in prayer. Where do those urges come from? Are they truly from God? Or are they merely stray thoughts? And if we respond in prayer, are others’ lives affected at all?

In Called to Pray, Linda Evans Shepherd shares dozens of inspiring true stories of people who have heeded God’s call to pray and the astonishing results of those impromptu prayers. Through accounts of people being protected from harm and rescued from danger, of needs being met and hearts being encouraged, you’ll see that God is involved in an active and dynamic relationship with us—and that we can be part of his plan to bless others.

If you have ever wondered if prayer has any real effect or doubted that God communicates with us personally, this heart-stirring book will amaze, inspire, and equip you to respond to those holy promptings.

Linda Evans Shepherd knows that all of us have that moment when The Holy Spirit gives us a burden to pray for someone and for a specific period of time. Ms. Shepherd begins the book with the story of Jack who forgot to make a fuel check before he took off from Miami to Fort Pierce. After a short period of time in the air he quickly realized his mistake, he was going down. The problem was there was no safe place to land. However at that moment a parishioner got the burden to pray for Jack. Suddenly a freshly plowed field appeared and Jack was safely able to land the plane with no damage and he walked away. The parishioner prayed at exactly the moment that Jack was in great need. His ordeal lasted a half hour, the parishioner prayed for the same length of time. Ms. Shepherd provides us lots of stories like this and at the end of each story she also provides us a prayer we can pray. The book is divided into ten parts:  1:  Called to Pray for Protection, 2:  Called To Pray for Rescue, 3:  Called To Pray for Needs, 4:  Called To Pray for Souls, 5:  Called To Pray for Breakthrough, 6:  Called To Pray for Guidance, 7:  Called To Pray for Miraculous Wonders, 8:  Called To Pray for Encouragement, 9:  Called To Pray for Trust and Faith and 10:  Called To Pray for Others. Prayer works! Sometimes we forget and we don’t pray as we should especially when we feel impressed to pray. Ms. Shepherd has given us a book that reminds us of the critical role we play. And she shows us the results of our prayers. This is a book that you will refer back to again and again. It will lift up your spirits when you feel empty or low.  A great resource!

Patrick W. Carr in his new book, “Shock of Night book coverThe Shock of Night” Book One in The Darkwater Saga series published by Bethany House introduces us to Willet Dura.

From the back cover:  The Darkwater Claims All Who Enter It.
All But One.

When one man is brutally murdered and the priest he works for mortally wounded, Willet Dura, reeve to the king of Bunard, is called to investigate. As he begins to question the dying priest, the man pulls Willet close and screams in a foreign tongue. Then he dies without another word.

Willet returns to his task, but the clues to the crime lead to contradictions and questions without answers, and his senses are skewed. People he touches appear to have a subtle shift, as though he can divine their deepest thoughts. In a world divided between haves and have-nots, gifted and common, Willet soon learns he’s been passed the rarest gift of all–a gift that’s not supposed to exist.

Now Willet must pursue the murderer still on the loose in Bunard even as he’s pulled into a dangerous conflict that threatens not only his city, but his entire world–a conflict  that will force him to come to terms with his inability to remember how he escaped the Darkwater Forest–and what happened to him inside it.

This is a murder mystery however this is also Christian Fantasy. Welcome to Darkwater, a land that we have never visited before. Willet Dura is a very complex person with his own problems. Then there are the possible motive for the murder which, I must say, is unique. Mr. Carr has given us a strange land with strange customs that we have to adapt ourselves to. Once we do that then the book really takes off. This is grand storytelling that has many facets to it and is meant to be enjoyed and savored.  Don’t hurry through the reading, even though you will want to, as there are many levels of story to take in. Make yourself a large bowl of popcorn and pour yourself a beverage you are going to be here reading for quite a while. Patrick W. Carr is an amazing writer and, in “The Shock of Night”, has given us a work that will have us thinking long after we have finished reading the book.  I am so looking forward to the next book in this wonderful series.

Book Review: “Surrounded by Enemies” by Bryce Zabel

Bryce Zabel in his new book, “Surrounded by Enemies book coverSurrounded by Enemies” Book One in the Breakpoint series published by Diversion Books gives us What if Kennedy survived Dallas?

From the back cover:  President John F. Kennedy has lived through the ambush in Dealey Plaza. America holds its collective breath, seeing its president nearly executed in broad daylight. But as the country marches on, the office of the President finds itself under a much more insidious type of fire. Political scandal, an endless war, and a country coming apart at the seams take the 1960’s in a terrifying new direction, and both John and his attorney-general brother, Bobby, struggle to stay ahead of their enemies, political and otherwise, and steer America toward a greater future.

Bryce Zabel is a master of the cover-up and the conspiracy, creating the Emmy-award winning series DARK SKIES. SURROUNDED BY ENEMIES is the first novel in the new Breakpoint series—each book exploring seminal moments in popular history and taking readers on a journey into a mirror world where events are both unexpected yet startlingly believable.

This savvy, fiercely intelligent novel, perfect for readers of Harry Turtledove, brings together elements of political thriller and page-turning history, enthralling readers with a sharply written take on the America that was, and the America that could have been.

I think those of us that were alive on November 22, 1963 vividly remember where we were and what we were doing when we received the news that Kennedy had been assassinated. There is a new type of fiction called Alternate History where the author takes an event and alters it significantly. Mr. Zabel has given us a well thought out what would have happened if Kennedy had survived in office? Yes, he was one of our beloved presidents however certain things he was doing politically are going to surface to bite him as well as his womanizing. What is totally fascinating is that everything that Mr. Zabel provides is perfectly believable and probably would have happened. On top of everything this is quite an engrossing thriller that will have you muttering “oh, no” as you are reading as fast as you can to get to the next page. Don’t start this book late at night as it will cost you sleep as you try to finish it before you go to bed. I am already looking forward to the next book in this series.
