“And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled. ” (Luke 1:63 NKJV))

We are counting the days until Christmas and we here at Word of Encouragement would like to spend this time together reviewing the prophecies and scriptures concerning the birthday of our King and seeing how they might apply to us today and seeing what encouragement we can receive from them.

“So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias.  His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.” But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” So they made signs to his father–what he would have him called.  And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled.  Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him” (Luke 1:59-66 NKJV).

Zacharias was ministering before the Lord at the altar of incense when the angel, Gabriel, appeared to him with a message, “But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.  And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.  For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, “to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time” (Luke 1:13-20 NKJV).

Because Zacharias didn’t believe Gabriel he was made mute for 9 months.  Did Zacharias ask a sensible question? Absolutely not! Abraham’s wife, Sarah, was well past the age of Elizabeth and God let Sarah have a son.  Jacob’s wife, Rachel and the prophet Samuel’s mother, Hannah, all were barren and God gave them children. The issue was not Elizabeth’s age the issue was Zacharias’ unbelief. It took nine months before he was able to speak again and that was only after he announced his agreement with the plan of God. The tradition was his son was named after him or some other member in the genealogy but they were going to break the tradition and name their son a new name. God was doing a brand new thing and God wanted everyone to be a part of it. So when Zacharias told everyone “his name is John” everyone marveled because this was not the way it was done. Then, when Zacharias was in agreement with God he was able to speak again and he immediately gave praise to his God

Child of God – it took nine months for Zacharias to speak again.  Nine months for his spirit to be in agreement with The Holy Spirit and give birth to the new thing that God was doing. God said this pregnancy was going to happen and the circumstances didn’t bother God and what God said God brought to fruition in nine months. In all our lives God is doing a new thing. Let us not doubt God based on our circumstances. Let us just come into agreement with God and let Him birth this new thing in us that God wants to accomplish. Then all the people will marvel!

Our prayer:
Lord, it is a wonderful thing that when I embrace your Word and believe it as it is, I can experience the mystery of conception and child bearing in a spiritual way. When you plant a seed in my spirit through your word and I feed it, it becomes “my baby” and when the appointed
time comes, I can have a happy delivery. Thank you for this privilege.
Amen.

If you want to have a personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior pray: “Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that out of love for me you willingly sacrificed your life so that I may live. I repent of all my sins and open my heart to you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer for the first time or if you have any questions please contact us. We would love to hear from you
